Academic Guidelines and Procedures

Academic Calendar

The academic year at Everett Community College is divided into three quarters of approximately 11 weeks each and a summer session of eight weeks.

Key dates for each term are listed in the catalog. Important dates for each quarter (such as registration dates, refund deadlines, etc.) are available online at EverettCC.edu/Deadlines.

Attendance

Attendance policies vary from course to course. Students are responsible for meeting the stated requirements of the courses in which they are enrolled.

Attendance during the first several sessions of the class is necessary in order to avoid administrative withdrawal for non-attendance. See the First Week Enrollment and Withdrawal Policy.

College Success Requirement

College Success is a mandatory class for most people working on a degree at Everett Community College. It is a graduation requirement that is designed to be taken in a student's first quarter.

Exempt Programs

The following programs are exempt from this requirement, and this exemption is automatically noted for you without needing to request a waiver:

  • Advanced Manufacturing Technology (e.g., welding, composites, machining)
  • Aviation Maintenance and Avionics
  • High School Completion/Transitional Studies
  • Cosmetology
  • Fire Science
  • Certificate programs
  • Personal Interest (no degree goal)
  • Running Start - students who complete at least one quarter through Running Start at Everett Community College are not ever required to complete the course to graduate

Waiver Qualifications

Students who do not qualify for an automatic exemption may qualify for a waiver. If any of the following criteria apply to you when you start working on a degree at Everett Community College, you qualify for a waiver. Contact advising@everettcc.edu to request a review of your record:

  • Already earned an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
  • Passed College 101 OR an equivalent course at another college or university
  • Completed 45 college-level quarter credits or 30 college-level semester credits with at least a 2.0 GPA at another college or university or through AP or similar
  • Earned 45 EvCC college-level credits with at least a 2.0 GPA before beginning a degree that requires College Success (Example: You earned at least 45 college-level credits toward a cosmetology certificate and now changed plans to work on a business degree.)
  • Current Registered Nursing student (that is, admitted to and enrolled in nursing program courses, like NURS 110)

Prerequisites and Co-requisites

A prerequisite, listed as Enrollment Requirements in the quarterly class schedule, is a course which must be taken before a student is allowed to enroll in another course, or the achievement of a minimum skills assessment score that indicates readiness for the course material.

For example: MATH 096 is a prerequisite for MATH& 141. Unless otherwise stated with the course description, a minimum grade of C (2.0) must be earned for the course to qualify as meeting a prerequisite.

Most prerequisites state that a student must be eligible for a specific course (ex. Eligibility for ENGL& 101). Eligibility is determined through looking at courses completed and, if applicable, test scores such as AP, high school and college transcripts, and other methods.

A co-requisite (CR) is a course that must be taken at the same time as another course. Students must abide by the course requirements for prerequisites and co-requisites. Faculty may administratively withdraw students who do not meet the prerequisites and co-requisites.

Equivalent Courses

The Transitional Studies division offers some courses that are equivalent to courses in English and math. Current equivalent courses are:

  • MATH 076 = TS 076 = HSC 076
  • MATH 086 = TS 086 = HSC 086
  • ENGL 097 = TS 097 = AEP 097 = ESL 097
  • ENGL 098 = TS 098 = AEP 098 = ESL 098 = HSC 098

Degree Planner

Degree Planner is a tool that helps students plan and track progress toward their academic and professional-technical goals at Everett Community College.

With Degree Planner, students can:

  • Create and review their academic plans
  • Track progress toward completing their credential(s) at EvCC
  • Work with faculty advisors to create or update degree plans
  • Plan courses that fit their schedule

Degree Planner also compiles an unofficial view of a student’s EvCC transcript, placement information, currently enrolled classes, and credits officially transferred from other institutions.

Course Numbering

Everett Community College offers courses that serve a variety of populations with different purposes. Course numbers may indicate the level of the course:

  • 001-099: Pre-college level skills development or enhancement courses; designed to help students prepare for success in college-level work where it is expected that their academic skills in general (or specifically) are not at the college level and/or the course material is aimed at below college-level skills.
  • 100-199: Introductory courses intended primarily for first-year college students with no significant deficiencies in their academic background.
  • 200-299: Intended primarily for students who have successfully completed one year of college-level work.

Common Course Numbering (CCN)

In Summer 2008, EvCC adopted common course numbering (CCN) in compliance with a statewide initiative of Washington’s public community and technical colleges. The primary purpose of this process is to enable students to know that CCN-identified courses taken at one community college will be the same as those courses at another Washington community college.

All CCN courses are identified with an ampersand (&) in the course number, for example: ENGL& 101. The common course number, as distinguished by the ampersand, does not confer any special transferability to a university, nor does it guarantee that the same course number will be used by Washington’s universities. To plan a smooth university transfer, see your advisor. A list of CCN courses is available online in our class schedule or in the course section of the catalog.  

Final Examinations

Most courses require a final examination. The college publishes an official final examination schedule each quarter. Students must take final examinations at the regularly scheduled time unless other arrangements are made with the instructor.

Waiver of Regulations

A petition for waiver of a specific academic regulation should be initiated in the Instructional Dean or Instruction Office.

EvCC Pathways

Everett Community College's pathways are designed to help students succeed. Pathways are similar areas of study that lead to related degrees and certificates. For example, all the science, technology, engineering, and math-related areas of study form the STEM pathway. Students with a clear path are more likely to achieve their academic goals. Each pathway has a support team who will work with students throughout their educational journey at EvCC.

All new students will select a pathway before registering for classes.

EvCC Pathways include: Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace; Arts; Business; Exploratory; Healthcare; Humanities; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM); Social Science, Education, and Public Safety; and Transitional Studies. For more information, see EverettCC.edu/Pathways.

EvCC Pathways Coaches

Most EvCC Pathways have a pathways coach. Coaches help students navigate their college and academic experience, identify resources and supports, and achieve their goals. Students are encouraged to connect with a pathways coach. For more information, visit EverettCC.edu/PathwaysCoaches.
